Fine art black and white chiaroscuro portrait by Henry David, sculptural studio lighting, heirloom portraiture

Fine Art Portraiture

Heirloom and milestone portrait commissions. Captured on Fujifilm GFX medium-format. Finished as hand-inspected archival prints, framed and made to outlast the occasion.

INQUIRE

A portrait should outlast the occasion.

My approach is rooted in the editorial tradition. Available light where possible, minimal retouching, a long quiet conversation with the subject rather than a quick technical exercise. Every commission is finished as a hand-inspected archival print — framed, mounted, and made to hang on a wall. Not a file on a phone. An object you pass down.

Two Offerings

Both commissions are captured on Fujifilm GFX medium-format and finished as hand-inspected archival prints. The difference is time, print count, and scope.

Questions

Where are sessions held?

In my St. Louis studio, on location in the region, or at a location meaningful to the subject. Travel beyond the region is available on commission.

Do you retouch?

Minimally. The tradition this work comes out of values honest skin and honest light. Retouching is reserved for removing genuine distractions, not for reshaping the subject.

How is the work captured?

On Fujifilm GFX medium-format digital. Larger sensor, finer tonal gradation, and more detail than 35mm systems. What you receive is always a hand-finished archival print, not a digital file.

How far in advance should I book?

Four to eight weeks is typical. Heirloom sessions involving travel or wardrobe development take longer.

Can I commission this as a gift?

Yes. Gift commissions are common, particularly for retirements, milestone birthdays, and anniversaries.

What about couples, families, or multi-generational portraits?

Yes. Pricing scales with session length and print output rather than subject count. Inquire with details.
