Notes

Nakazakicho is Osaka's slow neighborhood. Painted shopfronts, narrow streets, cafes that open when they feel like opening. It's the kind of place where a fashion editorial doesn't overpower the context — the neighborhood has its own voice, and the work is better for listening to it.

This was a multi-model editorial with Lucent Models Agency, one of Osaka's longest-running agencies. Kuramoto Maki coordinated. We shot Yukie, Coto, Suirenka, and Anna across two days, moving between stone walls, brick corners, and the late-afternoon light that falls between buildings in the older parts of the city. Each model got their own wardrobe direction and their own pace. The idea was never to standardize them into a lookbook — it was to make frames that felt like each person, in this specific place, at this specific hour.

Medium format. Natural light where possible, small fill where necessary. No stylist on set. The models brought their own sensibility and I directed loosely, more like a documentary photographer than a fashion one. The best frames are always the ones where the subject has stopped watching the camera and started watching something else.

Japan has been a consistent part of the studio's work. Agency collaborations in Osaka and Tokyo give editorial photographers something the US often doesn't: quiet, specific streets, an aesthetic tradition that values restraint, and models who know how to hold stillness. This shoot is a good representative of what that access produces.
