Notes

Shimbashi is the Tokyo that tourists miss. It's a warren of lantern-lit izakayas under elevated train tracks, a district that empties out by midnight and belongs to salarymen until then. We shot here on purpose. The neon light spills into the alleys in a way that a softbox can't fake, and the compressed geometry of the streets is a gift to a telephoto lens.

Emilia is represented by Elite Model Management Japan. She came in with the kind of presence that does the hard work for you. We moved between four or five blocks working fast, chasing the light between trains. Every frame was available light. No strobes. No fill. The goal wasn't to photograph a model in Tokyo; it was to photograph Tokyo with a person in it.

The wardrobe was deliberately quiet — leather jacket, houndstooth, a bag. The color came from the city. Red lanterns, sodium streetlight, the blue glow of a vending machine. Compression from a longer lens pulled the background architecture into shallow planes. The slight desaturation in post brings the series closer to the way a memory of Tokyo actually looks, not the postcard version.

This is the Tokyo I return to. Not Shibuya Crossing. Not Harajuku. The spaces between, where the city is still doing what it's doing whether you're there or not.
